Twist–Bend Nematic Phase Behavior of Cyanobiphenyl-Based Dimers with Propane, Ethoxy, and Ethylthio Spacers

چکیده

The twist–bend nematic (NTB) phase is a liquid crystal (LC) with heliconical structure that typically forms below the temperature of conventional (N) phase. By contrast, direct transition between NTB and isotropic (Iso) phases without intermediation N rarely occurs. Herein, we demonstrate effects linkage type (i.e., methylene, ether, thioether) on typical Iso–N–NTB rare Iso–NTB phase-transition behaviors cyanobiphenyl (CB) dimers CB3CB, CB2OCB, CB2SCB bearing three-atom-based propane, ethoxy, ethylthio spacers, respectively. In our previous study, exhibited monotropic transition. this report CB3CB also shows transition, whereas CB2OCB exhibits sequence decreasing temperature. Iso–LC (Iso–NTB or Iso–N) temperatures upon cooling show order (108 °C) > (49 (43 °C). thioether-linked vitrifiable, exhibit strong crystallization tendencies. are discussed in terms three bent homologous series different oligomethylene spacers n: CBnCB, CBnOCB, CBnSCB.

Molecular-statistical model for the nematic phase of semiflexible dimers

A microscopic model is developed to describe properties of a nematic phase consisting of semiflexible dimers. The effect of the chain bonding the two mesogens is described by the local conditional probability of their mutual orientation in terms of a bare stiffness

Entangled nematic colloidal dimers and wires.

It has been predicted, but never confirmed, that colloidal particles in a nematic liquid crystal could be self-assembled by delocalized topological defects and entangled disclinations. We show experimentally and theoretically that colloidal dimers and 1D structures bound by entangled topological defect loops can indeed be created by locally thermally quenching a thin layer of the nematic liquid...

DFT study of dimers of dimethyl sulfoxide in gas phase

Density functional (DFT) calculations at M05-2x/aug-cc-pVDZ level were used to analyze the interactions between dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) dimers. The structures obtained have been analyzed with the Atoms in Molecules (AIMs) and Natural Bond Orbital (NBO) methodologies. Four minima were located on the potential energy surface of the dimers. Three types of interactions are observed, CH•••O, CH•••...

Chiral amplification in a cyanobiphenyl nematic liquid crystal doped with helicene-like derivatives

The addition of a chiral non-racemic dopant to a nematic liquid crystal (LC) has the effect of transferring the molecular chirality to the phase organization and a chiral nematic phase is formed. This molecular chirality amplification in the LC provides a unique possibility for investigating the relationship between molecular structure, intermolecular interactions, and mesoscale organization. I...
